In Short

Black and red may be an overused motif at this sprawling live music venue/ art gallery/ bar--from the tattoo-style ceiling stencils to the baroque throne-like seats to the church pews--but somehow it works. Elements of kitsch keep it relatable (think foam tables and fake flickering candles), while bowls of peanuts invoke a neighborhood feel. The owners urge that (L)PR isn't a nightclub; it's a classical music-focused venue meant to bring the spontaneity back to art and the substance back to nightlife. Tag-team bookers ensure a mix of musical genres grace the stage on any given night, be it classical or jazz, indie rock or hip-hop.Hits: (L)PR is all about accessibility. Concerts cost, but there's no cover to get into the side carriage bar, which is also uber-cool, pumping out eclectic jams from Manu Chao to Nirvana. Misses: Seating arrangements vary in the listening room; sometimes 200 chairs are set up in rows, at other times it's standing-room only, causing some patrons to awkwardly squat on the floor pre-show.
